Spring and Winter

Germany, c.1905
Diameter: 23.7cm
Round, clear-glass panel, with black, brown and red vitreous paint, as well as yellow silver stain, painted in a fine and nuanced manner

Two representations of the seasons, with child hybrid beasts (a centaur and a roebuck)

These two children gallop energetically over a stretch of lawn, one of them carrying a bunch of flowers in its arm, the other with a child’s toy (a nutcracker on its back) and a staff in its hand, on the end of which is a head wearing a jester’s cap.

These are very attractive lively pieces that originally belonged to a Four Seasons cycle, of which Summer and Autumn are now missing.
